BACKGROUND

In designing this house, great care was taken to honour the natural topography and vegetation of the land, particularly the majestic palm and mangrove trees that grace the surroundings.

The journey towards creating this coastal haven began many years ago, as the owners meticulously explored houses and sites across southern Sri Lanka. In 2007, their quest led them to this remarkable property, nestled just beyond a quaint village on a bluff, offering unparalleled views of the sea and headlands. Following the purchase of the land in 2008, planning permission was secured in 2009, marking the commencement of a meticulous building process.

Construction commenced in 2011, culminating in the completion of the house in July 2016. The extended duration of the build reflects the unwavering commitment to quality, with every aspect of the project meticulously overseen by local craftsmen, resulting in a bespoke finish of the highest standard.

Guided by a vision of simplicity and comfort, the owner collaborated closely with architects Thushar Jayamanne and Philip Weenaratne, alongside their esteemed Sri Lankan architecture and design firm, PWA. Together, they sought to create a space that seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor living, with ample room for dining, reading, and relaxation.

The furniture, crafted from locally sourced materials such as kithul wood, a sustainable hardwood indigenous to Southern Sri Lanka, was meticulously designed by the team and brought to life by local artisans. The artwork adorning the walls is a curated collection of paintings acquired over the years, including pieces by Sri Lankan artists and those personally selected by the owner, adding a touch of cultural richness to the home’s aesthetic.

DINING ROOM

The expansive 6 meters by 6 meters dining room offers a breathtaking panorama, with sweeping views extending over the swimming pool to the azure sea beyond. At the heart of this inviting space sits a striking egg-shaped steel-framed polished concrete dining table, meticulously designed by the owner to seat ten people comfortably. Its unique shape ensures ample room for an array of dishes, perfect for indulging in a traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry feast.

Two low cupboards discreetly house essentials such as glasses and candles, adding a touch of practicality to the elegant setting. Adorning the walls is a captivating painting by a local Sri Lankan artist, capturing the essence of Elephant Pass, an iconic area renowned for its natural beauty.

Sliding glass doors lead seamlessly from the dining room onto the terrace, offering the option of translucent sun shades to shield guests from the afternoon sun’s glare. A ceiling fan provides a gentle breeze, ensuring a pleasant dining experience even on warmer days. Glass panels further enhance the sense of space and light, offering uninterrupted views across the courtyard and living room, creating a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor living spaces.

THE LIVING ROOM

The living room, accessible via a covered walkway from the dining room, spans an impressive 9 meters by 6 meters, offering a spacious and inviting sanctuary for relaxation and entertainment.

At the heart of this expansive space, two generously sized sofas provide ample seating for guests to unwind and socialize, while a large coffee table serves as a central focal point for gathering. A console table, positioned behind one of the sofas, subtly delineates the ‘lounging’ and ‘reading’ areas, adding a touch of versatility to the layout.

On the ‘reading’ side, two comfortable armchairs and a side table beckon guests to curl up with a good book or enjoy quiet moments of contemplation.

Like the dining room, the living room features sliding glass doors leading out onto the terrace, complete with translucent sun shades to offer respite from the afternoon sun when needed. Three ceiling fans provide a gentle breeze, ensuring optimal comfort even on warmer days.

Glass panels to the side afford panoramic views across the courtyard and dining room, seamlessly connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces and inviting the natural beauty of the surroundings to become part of the living experience.

Each of the three bedrooms boasts a luxurious double bed measuring over 2 meters in length, accompanied by side tables for added functionality. Ensuite bathrooms adjoin each bedroom, ensuring privacy and comfort for all guests.

Equipped with both air conditioning and ceiling fans, guests can enjoy optimal temperature control throughout their stay. Wooden shutters adorn the windows, adding a touch of elegance and allowing for natural ventilation.

mASTER DOUBLE BEDROOMS

Bedroom One, spanning an impressive 7 meters by 4.5 meters, is conveniently located off the covered walkway between the dining room and living room. Bedrooms Two and Three, marginally smaller at 6 meters by 4.5 meters, offer equally inviting spaces for relaxation.

Bedroom Two is situated at the far end of the house, while Bedroom Three boasts a tranquil courtyard at the back, adorned with a fragrant frangipani tree. The latter also features a TV and a diverse library, offering a delightful escape into the world of literature.

Each ensuite bathroom follows an ‘inside and out’ design concept, featuring double basins and toilets within fully covered spaces, complemented by open-air private shower areas. None of the bathrooms includes a bath, ensuring a streamlined and contemporary aesthetic.

As noted earlier, the bathrooms for Bedrooms Two and Three integrate palm trees within their walls, while Bedroom One’s bathroom showcases a charming flowerbed planted with Sri Lankan jasmine.

Bathroom One measures 5 meters by 4 meters, while Bathrooms Two and Three are slightly smaller, encompassing planted areas, at around 4 meters by 4 meters.

Swimming pool

Swimming pool19.2m long x 5m wide, and is 1.5m deep throughout its length. It has wide steps at either end of the house but leaving sufficient width for guests to swim laps, including tumble turns. The slate pool tiles were hand-cut and chosen to match the overriding colour of the sea. The pool is heated by the sun and is a chlorinated pool. There are underwater lights on three sides of the pool.

Garden

Indigenous Sri Lankan trees and plants. Great care was taken in designing the house to incorporate the existing trees and shrubs into the overall plan.

OUTSIDE

The outdoor spaces surrounding the villa offer a harmonious blend of tranquility and tropical charm, inviting guests to unwind and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of their surroundings.

Stretching the length of the house and bordering the pool, the front terrace features a wide, honed slate surface, flanked by three majestic palm trees and adorned with six sun loungers. This sun-drenched oasis provides the perfect setting for basking in the warm Sri Lankan sun or enjoying a leisurely swim in the pool.

At the far end of the house, a wooden decked side terrace offers a shaded retreat, nestled beneath the canopy of palm and witikeya trees. Here, guests can recline on two loungers, enveloped by the soothing sounds of nature, making it an ideal spot for quiet moments of relaxation and reading.

On the right-hand end of the pool, overlooking the sea, an outdoor dining terrace awaits, boasting local kithul wood tables and six chairs handcrafted by local artisans. This picturesque setting is a delightful spot for indulging in breakfast or savouring sundowners as the sun dips below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the swimming pool.

Steps leading down from the pool area to the lower garden and the gate to the beach offer convenient access to the pristine shoreline. Along the way, a long, cushion-covered bench, shaded by a witikeya tree, provides a serene sanctuary for contemplation or an afternoon nap.
