This Ocean Front House is a luxury ocean-front villa in Dikwella, Sri Lanka. About 15 kms from Dondra, the southern tip of Sri Lanka, and about 45 minutes from Galle through the new Highway. The Dondra to Tangalle stretch of coast is well known for its beauty and still largely undiscovered but is now within easy reach.

What’s inside this Tropical Luxury Beach house by Hiriketiya Surf Breaks?

The Luxury beach house is set around a central paved courtyard, about 30 metres above sea level. The courtyard is flanked on two sides by a large covered veranda with an adjoining kitchen, an open veranda for sunbathing and a 6 x 10 metre swimming pool. The pool’s infinity edge faces directly south through the coconut trees and over the surf to the horizon. The main covered veranda is the centre of the house with a dining area by the Koi fish pond and large sofas for relaxing at the south end, overlooking the terrace, the pool and the ocean beyond.

The bedrooms are cool and airy, with polished concrete floors and contemporary furniture, hand-built from local teak and mango. Thick 12″ mattresses and fine linen lie on striking, under-lit polished concrete beds topped with huge mosquito nets. Each room has a selection of thick white towels, coloured beach towels and lots of flowers.

The Dikwella Beach house has broadband Wi-Fi and receives a 3G signal. All bedrooms have mosquito nets, fans and air conditioning. There is a good quality amplifier and wall speakers on the veranda for iPods etc. with Bluetooth connectivity.

THE BEDROOMS

Two Master Bedrooms

The bedrooms are cool and airy, with polished concrete floors and contemporary furniture, hand-built from local teak and mango. Thick 12″ mattresses and fine linen lie on striking, under-lit polished concrete beds topped with huge mosquito nets. Each room has a selection of thick white towels, coloured beach towels and lots of flowers.

The Master bedrooms: The two largest Master bedrooms are set on the north side of the courtyard, each with large adjoining bathrooms partially open to the sky. Both of these rooms face the courtyard and they also look onto separate small gardens of their own.

The Courtyard and Sea Bedrooms

The Courtyard bedroom: This smaller bedroom lies on the west side of the courtyard and has wonderful elevated views across its own small private garden and lawn to the sea. Behind the bedroom is a simple, stylish bathroom.

The Sea bedroom: This bedroom lies much closer to the sea and provides more privacy. A similar size to the Courtyard bedroom, it is also bright and airy, with the whole of the south end of the room opening onto its own private terrace, just 30 metres from the sea and the sound of the surf.

Villa Staff:

The villa has four full-time staff. And Pinky, our feisty dachshund.

Christobel (Chris) Claessen manages the villa. She has many years of experience in hospitality, from private yachts to palatial residences. We are lucky to have her. She’s a wonderful cook with wide repertoire in the kitchen, from traditional Sri Lankan cuisine to other Asian and western dishes. She also makes a mean pizza. You can discuss with her your menu requirements when you arrive. She will also prepare picnic breakfasts and/or lunches if you plan a day trip.

Chris is also a mine of information; She will organise day trips and give you sound advice on almost anything!

Pathum looks after the pool, koi pond and shares the housekeeping with Shriyani. Ajith keeps our wonderful garden in great shape. All the staff will make every effort to make your stay a memorable one.

• The villa’s skilled private chef will happily prepare a range of delicious meals from a suggested menu, as well as discuss special requests and dietary requirements.
• Your rooms will be made up by the housekeeper/maid, who will also make sure your needs are attended to so that you can relax and enjoy the perfect getaway.

THE FOOD

The villa grows some of what you will eat when staying with them. From fresh herbs, rocket, spinach and tomatoes to mangos, jams, chilies and chutneys. Chef is careful to pick the best produce from the market if they don’t grow it themselves and always buy their fish and seafood locally. The whole focus is on the freshest ingredients.

The villa is fully serviced with four dedicated staff members – and even a lively little dachshund who often keeps guests entertained.

The in-house manager brings many years of international hospitality experience, from luxury yachts to exclusive private residences. A talented cook with a wide repertoire, she can prepare everything from authentic Sri Lankan dishes and Asian specialities to Western favourites-and even exceptional homemade pizza. Guests are welcome to discuss menu preferences on arrival, and picnic breakfasts or lunches can also be arranged for day trips and excursions.

The villa team also includes a dedicated pool and house attendant, a meticulous housekeeper, and a gardener who maintains the tropical grounds to perfection. Together, the staff are committed to delivering warm hospitality and creating a truly memorable holiday experience.

Many ingredients are sourced directly from the villa’s own garden: fresh herbs, rocket, spinach, tomatoes, mangos, chillies, chutneys, and homemade jams. Whenever produce is not grown on site, only the finest market selections are chosen, and fish and seafood are always purchased locally to guarantee freshness.

Breakfast is a highlight, featuring tropical fruits, buffalo curd, oven-fresh bread and croissants, homemade jams, eggs any style, crispy bacon, traditional hoppers with pol sambol, fine local tea, and rich espresso. Lunch and dinner are treated with the same flexibility, ensuring every meal is tailored to your preferences and made with the freshest possible ingredients.

EATING OUT:

Although this southeast coastline is still comparatively undeveloped, things are changing fast. There are a handful of excellent restaurants between Dikwella and Tangalle, some with amazing sunset views. And lots of the action is now down the lane on Hiriketiya Bay. Villa will update you with the latest news and reviews when you arrive.

THE BEACH LOCATION

Directly ahead, across 5,000 miles of uninterrupted water, lies the coast of Antarctica. We have seen blue whales passing just a few hundred meters from the bottom of the garden. Few places on earth offer such an opportunity. This Villa offers fantastic beaches a short walk away. A paradise for surfers and beach lovers.

CLOSEST BEACH: This property is beachfront.

CLOSEST SURFING BEACH: 400 mts (Hiriketiya beach).

CLOSEST SEASONALLY SAFE SWIMMABLE BEACH: 400 metres walk (Hiriketiya beach) or 10 minutes walk (Dikwella Beach).

When you tire of watching the surf break over the rocks at the bottom of the garden, there are many lovely beaches on this stretch of coast. Three stand out as special, two of which are just a few minutes walks. The closest is Hiriketiya Bay, sometimes known as Horseshoe Bay 250 metres down the lane to the east. This is idyllic, usually deserted, and offers safe swimming. It also has a useful, year-round surf break. The beach curves 450 metres from end to end, although the neck of the bay is only 180 metres wide; a near-perfect horseshoe. Some mornings it is as still as a pond.

400 metres to the west of the house is Dikwella beach, a beautiful 2 km stretch. It can see some impressive waves, although the water is usually calm at this end of the beach; it is good for bodyboarding. Dikwella Beach Resort lies at the far end and offers various water sports, including diving excursions. Further afield, are the beaches of Mawella, about 5 Kms to the east, which is stunning, pristine and very long. It is usually deserted and has several beach restaurants. It has larger waves at the far end and calm water at the western end.

Security deposit: Upon arrival at the villa you may be required to pay a security deposit. The security deposit, if applicable, will be returned to you prior to departure or as agreed less any extra charges or costs for accidental damage to the property.

Check-in/out

• Usual Check-in after 2.00 pm and Check out – Before 11.00 am
• Late check-outs up to 6.00 pm may incur a half-day charge, after 6.00 pm a full day may be charged.
• Every effort will be made to accommodate other check-in/out times but this will depend on availability.

“A Villa Beyond Our Wildest Dreams” – Visited January 2022

“We were sold by the photos when booking, but there was still a collective gasp from our group as we walked through the doors of the Villa for the first time. The gardens with incredible views of the sea, swimming pool and living areas all blend together seamlessly. The whole place is effortlessly stylish and the understated luxury made us feel instantly comfortable but still spoilt. We were three families, all with kids under 5 years old, and the open plan, inside/outside design worked perfectly for our group. The team looking after us there, led by Chris, were out of this world. They were so friendly, helpful and accommodating, yet discreet, and cooked without doubt some of the tastiest Sri Lankan food you’re ever likely to eat (as well as cooking various things suitable for the kids). The villa is in a prime location, a few mins walk or 1 minute tuk tuk ride to both Hiriketiya and Dikwella beaches. There are loads of great restaurant and bar options within a few minutes of the villa too, including our favourite spot, Smoke & Bitters. I cannot recommend the Villa enough. You could easily describe a stay there as a once in a lifetime experience, which it would be, if we weren’t now determined to book again in the future.”

“Everything we wanted” – Date of stay: March 2019

“When you approach the beach House, a few questions might come into your mind. Once through the gates, they disappear. The villa is in a superb position, overlooking the sea – although the coastline is rocky at the bottom of the garden, so there is no swimming (but there are good beaches within walking distance). We were greeted by a team of smiling staff, who throughout the holiday could not have been more helpful. We were a family group, with adult children and some of their friends. I am not sure that the House would work with young children.

The villa is built around an eating and seating area and a swimming pool. The four double bedrooms are separate from the main house. They are very comfortable and all are air-conditioned. A couple of the bathrooms are partly open to the elements, which provides the opportunity to observe some of the wildlife while showering. There are mosquito nets around the beds, although we did not find there was a mossie problem. The infinity swimming pool is a good size and depth (too deep for young children), and has wonderful views over the garden towards the sea.

The best for last – fantastic food. We enjoyed a range of hugely enjoyable locally-based meals. Egg hoppers, waffles and fresh fruit at breakfast. Lighter lunches (tuna tartar was the highlight for us) and more substantial dinners. We talked through the menu for the next day every evening. We has quite a few nicely spiced curries – not too potent, I should add. A delivery of wine can be arranged before your stay – we ordered some decent white Burgundy and an Italian red.

All in all, this luxury beach house is a wonderful place to stay and reasonably situated for some interesting days trips. It compares very favourably to some of the better Italian villas we have stayed in. We were superbly looked after by the staff, to whom nothing was too much trouble. One of the team is an expert masseur, something that proved very popular. We came home thoroughly relaxed after a ten-day stay.”

Our meals were exquisite made by the wonderful Chris, ( we were practically rolling out of the villa by the end of the stay from the sheer quantity of food). In the daytime, we managed to tear ourselves away from the pool and onto the beautiful Hiriketiya Beach, only 5 minutes away, where we delighted in the great surf and delicious cocktails. Our rooms were very comfortable and had very generously sized bathrooms. The evenings at the villa were beautiful overlooking large palm trees and the deep Indian Ocean beyond.
