Beach Villas in Galle – Main highlights and downsides
Beach Villas in Galle: pros and cons of renting a Villa in Galle
How to choose the best location for your Villa Holiday in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is a beautiful island with magnificent beaches from the North to the South. Depending on the monsoon period and your time of travelling, the Western and Southern Coast are more advisable than the Eastern coast. The Eastern Coast is still wide and with a limited hotel offer, as only ten years ago, it was hit by the civil war in the country. However, things are changing rapidly and there is a wide range of budget hotels and luxury hotels on the coast, particularly in Nilaveli Beach and Passikudah Beach. The best period to travel to the East coast is from June to October every year.
However, if you are looking for a beach Villa in Sri Lanka, we recommend you to look on one of the stunning beaches that stretch from Bentota, through Galle, Mirissa, Weligama, Matara, Dikwella and Tangalle.
What is the best period to rent a Villa in Sri Lanka?
The best period to rent a Beach Villa in the south coast of Sri Lanka is during the season that goes from December to April every year, when the eastern monsoon is on the Eastern part of the country and the Western and Southern beaches are at their best. The waters are calm and many beaches are swimmable and safe, as they are protected by reefs.
Beach Villas in Galle: pros and cons of Galle Beaches
Villas in Galle are very popular and we receive many enquiries each year asking for a Villa in Galle Beaches. Galle and Talpe are the “places to be” for most of the Luxury Villa Holiday makers to Sri Lanka. Talpe stretch has been baptised by some the “Millionaires stretch” or the “Sri Lankan Riviera”, in the South Coast of Sri Lanka, due to its high concentration of luxury villas and hotels. All dotted with stunning Beach Villas, almost all of them are fully staffed with a Private chef/cook and private Pool.
PROS OF RENTING A VILLA IN GALLE
- Conveniently located near the Southern Expressway exit, which allows you to reach the southern coast quickly from the International Airport or from Colombo within 2 to 2.30 hours;
- Villas in the Galle area are between 5 to 15-minute drive away from the historical UNESCO Galle Fort;
- The Villas are surrounded by an en excellent choice of restaurants, cafes and bars with a good quality nightlife and shopping options, particularly in Galle Fort and Unawatuna Beach.
DOWNSIDES OF RENTING A VILLA IN GALLE
While Villas in Galle and Talpe are in a good location for a villa Holiday, not all beaches right in front of the Villa are safe to swim: there are a few pockets of swimmable beach locations, such as Habaraduwa Beach (see below), where some are protected by the reef. Villa 46 and Villa 44 are some good examples. Villa 41, which is 50 meters from Villa 44, does not have a swimmable friendly beach right in front of the villa, but it is only few minutes walk from the other sister Villa. However, a stone’s throw walk to Villa 44 is not much to ask for, if you fancy a nice safe swim.
WINE AND DINE IN A GALLE VILLA
Most villa holiday makers gather to the famous Wijaya Beach (which in the High and Peak season can be overcrowded), where you can find a nice spot to swim and chill. If you want to dine at Wijaya Beach, it is best to book in advance, especially during Christmas and New Year period.
However, we also recommend you to enjoy the Sri Lankan and international cuisine that some Villas in Galle are able to offer, with their private cook or chef service. As an example, if you stay at Villa 45, there is no need to dine out! All food is served at the villa, at ingredients cost, with a fantastic Chef making pizzas (from their own Private Garden wooden oven), pastas and Excellent Indian and Sri Lankan cuisine. There is no need to make much visit to any restaurant outside! However, remember to give a good tip to the staff, as all meals are given on ingredients cost. Read more on how it works with Villa meal policies in Sri Lanka.
Villa 56 is also a great choice, which is nearby 45. It has been recently refurbished, with a more modern and minimalist style. The Villa also is one of the few Villas in Sri Lanka with a private gym and has an excellent Chef that can prepare fine dining, barbecues and other Sri Lankan and international specialities.
2 to 3 BEDROOM VILLAS IN GALLE AREA
While all the mentioned villas have 5 to 6 bedrooms, there are smaller villas for smaller families, such as Villa 11, a very popular Villa that gets booked fast. The Villa has a fantastic chef. Some other excellent villas in Galle ideal for smaller groups and families (ideally for those who seek 02 or 03 bedroom villas) are Villa 1, Villa 8, Villa 9, Villa 57 and Villa 70.
If you are looking for something way over the top, then the two-bedroom Villa 15 in Talpe is the best choice: a spectacular Villa that comes with a friendly staff and exceptional services.
BEST BEACHES IN THE GALLE AREA
Some other Villas near Galle to consider are Villa 88, a modern Villa in Ahangama, with a fantastic beachfront location. Ahangama is a great place to be if you are looking for a calm and safer beach in the south (during the season). Another important aspect not to forget is that you can find some great surf points nearby.
If you are looking for some 2-3 bedroom Villas in Ahangama, but few minutes from the beach in a quiet surrounding, do not miss Villa 24, and Villa 107.
Villa 24 is a great choice for those who want to stay near a beach, but in a peaceful environment in front of the Koggala Lake. The Ahangama beach is only 10 minutes away, through a peaceful village road. The Villa management provides bicycles to reach the beach. Alternatively, you can hire a tuk tuk. Villa 107 is a stunning luxury Villa overlooking the paddy fields. This is located a little bit further from the beach (approximately 20 minutes), but it is a fabulous option to enjoy the rural Sri Lanka, in a spacious Villa with total privacy. The villa overlooks the paddy fields and a small lake. The nearest beach is Ahangama, a 20-minute drive from the Villa.
As mentioned before, Habaraduwa is a great spot for swimming and according to us, one of the nicest beaches in the South of Sri Lanka. Some of the nicest Villas in Galle are located in Habaraduwa Beach: one of them is Villa 59 , which is also of the best Family Friendly Villas in Sri Lanka, featuring a fourth bedroom with bunk beds for children, as well as toys and other kids amenities. Other Villas located on this fantastic and safe beach stretch are Villa 9 – a two-bedroom Villa, ideal for a small group or family – and Villa 70, a 3-bedroom Luxury Beachfront Villa, one of the most popular.
